Hairdresser Talk Tuesday: How to get the Haircut you want

Hairdresser Tip Tuesday

How to get the haircut you want from your hairdresser:

Sometimes communicating with your hairdresser can be difficult, and a bad haircut is something that could leave you scarred and mortified.  These tips from glamour.com are straight-from-the-pros and will help you have a better relationship with your hairdresser to give you a perfect do.

  1.  Be careful when you use the words “short” and “shorter”….

Your hairdresser’s version of short could be very different from yours.  To prevent a freak-out from losing too much length, ask your stylist to show you exactly how short they’ll be cutting.  We want to make our clients feel happy about their cuts, so don’t hesitate to ask about how much will be cut off.

2.  Talk in terms of problems you have with your hair and not “who you’d like to look like” solutions.

Create a list of the issues you’ve had in the past with your haircuts and all the styling issues you are having with your hair.  Also add colour or chemical problems to the list.  This allows us to solve your problems instead of … “asking for more layers because you need more volume or adding a darker colour because your colour is fading.”

3.  Use the right language – and a lot of it….

Some of the right words could mean the difference between you and the best cut of your life versus a monster cut, so be specific about what you want – your stylist really won’t mind if it takes you a few different tries to say explicitly what you mean.  Especially when discussing bangs, “I like words that are a little more descriptive like soft, or strong bangs, or a general vibe such as I don’t want hard lines,” – says celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson. (glamour.com).

4.  Bring in a hairstyle scrapbook.

See that amazing haircut of a celebrity you love on pinterest – screenshot it on your phone and scrapbook that pic!  Not so tech saavy? Bring in a few celeb magazine photos you’ve gazed at and wanted your hair to look like.  “Photographs are a terrific starting point, so I recommend my clients bring images that relate to the hair texture they want, shapes and colours that they love and inspires them.” says Sassoon Salon regional creative director Martyn Duff. (glamour.com)  Loredana wants to create the cut you want, and bringing in a visual representation will help provide the background for reaching that great cut.

5.  Be prepared for some ideas to stay in the “wishful thinking” pile….

Your ideal hairstyle might not work entirely with the hair you were blessed with, and a good stylist won’t try to do something impossible, which could result in an unflattering do.  “Your stylist will either explain why your hair type won’t work for the style or tell you the steps that can be taken to achieve that style.  Either way, photographs will still help your stylist see your vision and communicate your hair dreams”.  (glamour.com).

Ultimately Loredana loves to hear ideas from our clients and will combine her expertise and your inspiration to create that look that will make you look glamorous!  Happy Tuesday!
